About the Technology

Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is a non-invasive method of measuring body composition by sending a safe, low-level electrical current through the body. Different tissues — fat, muscle, bone, and water — conduct electricity at different rates, and the device uses these resistance measurements to calculate body fat percentage, muscle mass, hydration levels, and dozens of other metrics. The process is painless, takes seconds, and requires no radiation or special preparation beyond basic guidelines. BIA has been used in clinical and professional settings for decades and is the gold standard for scalable body composition assessment.
Anovator devices are FDA 510(k) cleared and clinically validated for accuracy and repeatability. Multi-frequency BIA — the technology Anovator uses — is widely recognized as among the most accurate non-invasive body composition methods available at scale. While no body composition method outside of cadaver analysis is 100% definitive, studies consistently show multi-frequency segmental BIA to be highly correlated with DEXA results when standard scan protocols are followed. Accuracy is maximized when clients follow the recommended preparation guidelines (fasting, hydration, no exercise beforehand), and results are most meaningful when tracked consistently over time.
Standard single-frequency BIA sends current at one frequency (typically 50 kHz), which limits the depth and accuracy of tissue differentiation. Multi-frequency BIA uses multiple electrical frequencies simultaneously — low frequencies that flow primarily through extracellular fluid and high frequencies that penetrate cell membranes — to build a far more detailed picture of body composition. This approach allows the device to separately measure intracellular and extracellular water, improve fat mass and fat-free mass estimation, and produce segmental readings for each limb and the trunk independently. The result is clinically meaningful data that single-frequency devices simply cannot provide.
Anovator devices measure 30+ body composition metrics, including body fat percentage, lean body mass, skeletal muscle mass, visceral fat level, total body water, intracellular and extracellular water, basal metabolic rate (BMR), segmental muscle and fat analysis (right arm, left arm, trunk, right leg, left leg), bone mineral content estimate, metabolic age, and body mass index (BMI). The exact metrics vary by model — the A5 offers the most comprehensive output, including 3D visualization. All results are delivered in a clear, branded report that clients can review on-screen or take home.
Yes. Anovator devices hold FDA 510(k) clearance, which means they have been reviewed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and determined to be substantially equivalent to a legally marketed predicate device. This clearance is important for professional settings such as medical clinics, chiropractic offices, and sports medicine facilities, and it gives clients and practitioners confidence in the clinical credibility of the measurements. Anovator is also used in 40+ countries and meets relevant regulatory standards in those markets.
DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) is often considered the reference standard for body composition and bone density measurement, but it requires expensive equipment, licensed technicians, radiation exposure, and a clinical setting — making it impractical for routine or high-volume use. Anovator's multi-frequency segmental BIA delivers results that correlate strongly with DEXA for most body composition metrics, with the key advantages of being radiation-free, non-invasive, faster (15-second scan), significantly less expensive, and accessible in a gym, wellness center, or office setting. For practitioners who need frequent tracking or want to offer body composition analysis as a service, Anovator is the practical, scalable alternative.

Using the Device

The measurement itself takes approximately 15 seconds. Including setup — the client stepping onto the device, entering basic data such as height and age, and reviewing the on-screen results — a complete session typically runs 3 to 5 minutes. This makes it practical to include a scan at intake, during regular check-ins, and before or after program milestones without disrupting the rest of the client session.
For best accuracy, clients should avoid eating or drinking for 2–4 hours before a scan, refrain from intense exercise for at least 12 hours prior, avoid alcohol for 24 hours beforehand, and arrive normally hydrated (not over-hydrated). Scans should be taken at a consistent time of day and with consistent clothing (or no shoes and minimal clothing) across sessions to enable meaningful longitudinal comparisons. Women should note that results can fluctuate during certain phases of the menstrual cycle due to water retention changes.
Anovator does not recommend using BIA devices on pregnant women. While the electrical current is extremely low and safe for most populations, there is insufficient research on its effects during pregnancy, and standard precaution advises against it. Practitioners should always screen clients before scanning and use their clinical judgment in cases involving pregnancy or other sensitive conditions.
Clients with implanted electronic devices such as pacemakers, cardiac defibrillators, or neurostimulators should not use BIA devices, including Anovator. The low-level electrical current, while harmless for most people, could theoretically interfere with the operation of implanted electronic medical devices. Staff should screen for these contraindications before scanning. Clients with non-electronic implants such as metal joint replacements or dental implants can generally use the device normally; however, it is always advisable to check with the implant manufacturer or a healthcare provider when uncertain.
For most wellness, fitness, and weight management programs, scanning every 4 to 8 weeks is optimal. This interval gives the body enough time to show measurable composition changes while keeping clients engaged and motivated. For more intensive programs — such as competitive athletes or post-surgical rehabilitation — more frequent scanning (every 2 weeks) can be useful for monitoring specific metrics like muscle mass or hydration. Daily scanning is generally not recommended as short-term fluctuations in hydration can mask true body composition trends.
Yes. Anovator devices are designed for efficient use by any trained staff member — no clinical background is required. The device guides both staff and client through the scan process, and results are displayed automatically on-screen with clear visual breakdowns. Anovator provides onboarding training and support materials so your team is confident from day one. Most staff are fully comfortable operating the device after a single training session.

The Anovator Models

Anovator offers four professional body composition analyzers: the A5 (flagship, premium multi-frequency segmental analyzer), the M3 (advanced professional), the M1 (essential professional), and the M0 (entry-level professional). Each model is FDA 510(k) cleared and designed for professional use. The lineup allows businesses to choose the feature set and investment level that best matches their volume, use case, and budget.
